​- Theorizing media and conflict with a focus on the Horn of Africa
- Oromo culture and identity in media
- Shifting constructs of Ethiopian social and political identity in East African and Middle Eastern news

My past research on diasporas and cultural identification in media included:

- Television formats, adaptations and media systems in African contexts
- Contemporary Ethiopian cinema (DVDs, YouTube, subscription-based online media)
- Global Nigerian media and culture industries (Nollywood and Kannywood)
- Technology developments and new thematic and aesthetic influences in online Nollywood and Gollywood cinema (iROKOtv and iBAKATV)
